To chase after the summer and capture the last in-season opportunity to hike Mt. Fuji we set course to Tokyo City. After a hustle of getting out of Sasebo, escaping the heavy rain and all public transportation paralyzed we managed to drive to Fukuoka to learn out flight is cancelled. Without missing a beat, Josh's big dream came true and we were riding in the fastest train there is - Shinkansen.
It's true what they say, you either can handle a big city or you hate it. I thrive in concrete jungles, finishing my days with over 20k steps, items crossed off the numerous lists, countless interesting observations and interactions and the fascinating edge you can only get from intense abundant competition.
As a tourist, big city is an absolute joy assuming you know what you want and did your research prior to the trip. Even if you just hopped on a plane and showed up at your hotel with a bag, you will still find many options to choose from.
We stayed at New Sanno Hotel that offers amazing affordable accommodations for service members (please visit their website for more info). We got a Japanese-style room with a garden, tatami floors, futon sleeping mats (the best sleep we've ever had) and a lovely room service.
Not to tease you any further, here is the list of favorite things to do while in Tokyo:
1- eat at Izakaya type restaurants with a narrow specialization (noodles, fish, ramen, gyoza, tankatsu etc)
2- hike Fuji (aim for at least 2 days experience for more comfort)
3- get your hair done (the best hairdressers move to bigger cities)
4- TeamLab (turned out I've already seen their work at Mifuneyama, Takeo)
5- exhibition at Gajoen Hotel
This time around I recorded short videos and here is what came out of it. I hope you like it too!
