Meditation. Emotions.

Today I was sitting outside reading the new Yoga Journal magazine on my balcony. I came across a very good article about meditation. Richard Miller, PhD was sharing his story about missing a flight once as he was running late. He goes on saying how he first was angry with the flight attendant as he had an expectation of her holding the door for him. He then reflected on his emotions and instead of letting the anger consume him, he just asked if another flight was available. Sure thing, there was one leaving from the gate near by.
I missed a flight once in my life, it was caused by a previous flight getting delayed. I was running the whole way and the gate was closed a minute before my arrival. They had to put me on the next flight in couple of hours. I was so devastated and breathless from the run. However, it was my second time going to Spain and I was pretty familiar with Madrid Barajas airport, plus Iberia airlines gave me a food voucher. So I went on a journey. I had to call my friend to let her know I'm not going to be meeting her by the Cathedral and I got charged bazillion amount of money for that call. Needless to say I never called from a stationary airport phone again! I had time to explore the whole airport, enjoyed a glass of wine (or two) and tons of good food, including my favorite jamon. And then I boarded the plain and it was almost empty so I had the whole row to myself. I could get angry with the poor stuff at the gate but instead I've learned some valuable lessons about traveling and enjoyed my time. Emotions, they are like you, they want to be seen, heard, felt and connected to. They want your attention so they can help you to stop and access the information you need not just survive but thrive. Coming next is the meditation he offered!
